Many individuals who are not familiar with current media research seem to ignore the immense strides taken in the field. Contrary to much of what Gauntlett's article states, theory in the area has blossomed in the past decade, and the methodology has advanced dramatically to reduce the effects of its "artificiality."
Those interested in media effects would benefit greatly from perusing peer-reviewed academic research journals in addition to the sometimes-biased chapters in books aimed solely at making a profit.
